Illinois election officials say they’re trying to assess a U.S. Supreme Court decision that could have an impact on voting by mail in the upcoming November 3rd elections.
Capitol News Illinois reports the nation’s high court temporarily lifted an injunction that blocked the Trump administration from implementing new federal restrictions on mail-in ballots.
On March 31st, Trump ordered the Department of Homeland Security to develop lists for each state of residents who are confirmed U.S. citizens over the age of 18. The order also directs the Postal Service not to pick up or deliver mail ballots to any person not on that list.
A spokesperson for the Illinois State Board of Elections said that agency is conferring with the state attorney general’s office to determine how it might affect voting in Illinois.
Local election authorities in Illinois are scheduled to begin sending out mail ballots on September 24th.
