A federal jury in Springfield awarded about $6 million in damages to a Girard man who died in a trucking collision in 2020.

Chicago-based law firm Levin and Perconti represented the family of 56-year-old John Bradley Barnes.

The firm said Barnes was killed when a truck operated by Michael Hegger of Greenwood Motor Lines was illegally parked on the shoulder of Interstate 55 south of Springfield and crashed into Barnes’ vehicle when re-entering traffic.

The jury found Barnes 40 percent liable for the collision and reduced the final judgment to about $6 million.
