Logan County leaders are condemning the Illinois Department of Corrections decision to relocate the Logan Correctional Center to a proposed new facility in Will County.

The department announced Friday it will proceed with planning for men’s and women’s prisons near Crest Hill. IDOC said typical construction takes five years.

Logan Correctional Center will remain open during planning and construction of the new facility. A joint statement from State Senator Sally Turner, State Representative Bill Hauter, Logan County Board Chairman James Glenn and Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch said moving the facility would do nothing to improve outcomes of the people incarcerated there, and they will continue to fight the decision.
