The September unemployment rate in Illinois of 4.6 percent was nearly the same as the previous month and one year ago according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
Total nonfarm jobs were down 7,200 over the month but 13,800 higher than September 2025.
The largest number of job increases were in construction, leisure and hospitality, and private education and health services.
