One person is in custody after a pet dog was discovered in a state of fatal neglect in Chatham.

The Chatham Police Department reports that just before 10:30 AM on Friday morning, officers responded to a report of animal abuse at a home in the 2000 block of Covered Bridge Road. Officers found a severely malnourished pet dog confined to a small area surrounded by excrement. County Animal Control assisted in taking the dog for emergency care, but it died soon after arriving at a veterinarian’s office.

Later that afternoon at 2:11 PM officers located and arrested the dog’s owner, 43-year-old Laurie Fuchs, at a home in Southern View. Fuchs is held on charges of aggravated animal cruelty in the Sangamon County Jail.
