Governor JB Pritzker signed the Fiscal Year 27 budget into law on Tuesday.
The 56-billion-dollar plan is the largest in state history. Capitol News Illinois reports top Democrats say they focused on affordability this year.
The budget makes investments in education, housing and health care.
There is also a new plan that will give people losing SNAP benefits a one-time payment of 400 dollars. And the one-cent gas tax increase scheduled for July is being pushed back to January.
Pritzker says the budget puts money back into people’s pockets.
The budget has new taxes on fantasy sports, prediction markets, and digital assets. There is also a tax on social media companies that could be challenged in court. Republicans argue creating taxes to help pay for new spending doesn’t help Illinois families.
